Some easy steps to measure your face to find the perfect frame fit.

In general, your frames should sit on the outside of your cheekbones. A key part of finding out your perfect frame fit is where your eye sits in the lenses.

lens width

An average lens width is 46-49mm.
A petite lens width is 46-49mm or less.
A large or oversize lens width is 50+mm.
To work out your best fit, put on a pair of frames and look at where your eye sits within the frame. It should be in the middle of the lens horizontally, and in the middle or above the middle of the frame vertically. It's best not to have your eye sit too high in the lens or too close to the bridge.

frame temples

A standard frame temple length is between 143-150mm. If you find that your frames don't fit properly or are slippery on your ears, this can be easily adjusted by taking them to your optometrist. They simply heat the acetate up, which is the material on the arms of the frame, and mould them to your preference.

frame bridge

A nose bridge is generally 19-23mm. There are many different varieties of bridges and different bridges will sit differently on the nose. As a rule of thumb you want a frame that sits comfortably on your nose, but you can also get adjustable nose pads from your optometrist if you need a custom bridge fit.

PROTECTION

Always carry your eyewear in the auór leather pouch to protect them from getting scratched. If you carry them in a bag full of heavy items (like a suitcase when travelling) we recommend using the cardboard case for extra protection. If you lose your leather pouch you can also purchase them separately on our website here

Cleaning your eyewear regularly is the best way to keep them looking great and to prevent lens scratches and other eyewear damage. You can do this by running your eyewear under lukewarm water and cleaning with a drop of lotion-free mild detergent. You can also use a lens cleaning solution with a microfibre cloth. Further details on lens cleaning are detailed below.

Avoid placing your eyewear on rough or harsh surfaces, as this may scratch the lenses or acetate. We can replace damaged lenses or buff off scratches on acetate if required. Please email info@auor.co for a quote.

CARE

To help keep your eyewear in shape it’s best to handle them with both hands. When folding your eyewear there will be an arm that sits more neatly under the other. Find this and fold your frames this way each time to keep them in the best shape.

Avoid leaving your eyewear in places that get really hot for long periods of time, like in the car, glove box or dashboard over summer. Acetate becomes softer in hot temperatures and eyewear can become wonky if they heat up and are under heat pressure in some way. If this happens, a repair shop or optometrist can heat up your eyewear and re-align them for you. You can find out more details about our recommended repair services in Australia and New Zealand below.

Steps to do this at home are listed below.

Also avoid leaving your eyewear in exposed sunlight for long periods, like on the dashboard of your car or submerged in water or salt water for long periods. This will protect them from fading and rusting.

Tips for cleaning your eyewear

  1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly to ensure your hands are free from dirt, grime, lotion or anything else that could be transferred to your lenses.
  2. Rinse your eyewear under a gentle stream of lukewarm water. This will remove dust and other debris, which can help avoid scratching your lenses when you are cleaning them. Do not use hot water.
  3. Apply a drop of mild detergent to the lenses using your finger tip and then gently clean each part of the frames including the nose pads and the ends of the temples that rest behind your ears where oil can build up.
  4. Rinse well with lukewarm water to ensure no soap is left on your eyewear. Gently shake and dry with a soft towel.

If you are out and about or want to clean your lenses quickly (not the entire frames) you can use a soft microfibre cloth and some lens cleaning spray. Use plenty of spray to flush away any dust before wiping dry.

We sell environmentally friendly Gobe glass cleaner here and all of our eyewear comes with a soft microfibre cleaning cloth.

REALIGNMENT & TIGHTENING

Tips for a comfortable fit

When you buy a new pair of eyewear they may require some adjustment to ensure a comfortable fit. If they need some tweaking we recommend you take them to a local optometrist or to SOS Eyewear in Australia and New Zealand to have them fit to your particular head shape. All our eyewear is designed with an average head and face measurement in mind. If they feel uncomfortable on your nose, or slip down, nose pads can be inserted into the acetate.

If the sunglasses feel tight on the side of your head, the temples or arms of the frames have wires in them, and can be bent to curve around your head for a more comfortable fit if needed.

Wearing eyewear regularly on top of your head is another way which can loosen the overall fit of your frames over time. If the fit of them is right when they arrive, we recommend avoiding wearing them on the top of your head to prevent unwanted loosening.

If they become too loose, an optometrist may be able to bend the temples of your eyewear to fit them perfectly again or you might be able to do this at home. In some cases the screws of your eyewear may become loose over time, which can be simply adjusted by tightening them with a specialised eyewear screwdriver.

If your eyewear is crooked

If your sunglasses are crooked (lens sitting higher on one side) there may be a slight twist in the bridge (nose) causing one temple (arm) to sit higher than the other on your ears. If they feel crooked on your face, you can confirm this further by putting the sunglasses either upside down or the right way up on an even table top and if one temple doesn't touch the table, you know they are crooked.

You can adjust this at home on your own (see below) or send them back to us to be adjusted or simply take them to your local optometrist.

Tips for adjusting crooked eyewear at home

  1. Use a hair dryer to carefully heat up the bridge (nose) of your eyewear to soften the acetate. Allow 20 - 30 seconds of heat, which should be enough to create movement and malleability of your frames. This time may vary depending on how close the acetate is to the heat source.
  2. As the acetate gets warmer, and the acetate softens a little, by holding the top and bottom of the front of your frames, you will be able to twist the bridge (nose) slightly so that the top of the frames align. You will know when it’s done properly when the tips of both temples touch a table or flat surface.
  3. Allow the frames to cool down on a flat surface before putting them away or wear them for at least 5 mins.
  4. Don't force the frame to bend and if you are unsure at any point stop and contact us at info@auor.co, SOS Eyewear or your local optometrist.
  5. Ideally the heat should only be put on the section that needs bending and should be monitored closely so as not to heat up too much. Try to avoid direct heat on the lenses as this can damage the coating.

* Excessive force while unheated may cause damage. If you choose to adjust your frames at home use caution and care from the heat from the hair dryer.
